NMBS raises funds for the Rainy Day Trust

Guests at the National Merchant Buying Society Gala Dinner 2011 raised a massive £2,250 for the Rainy Day Trust in Telford.  The event took place in May, and the same amount was also donated to the charity CRASH.  This amount will increase when Gift Aid is claimed.

RDT trustees were delighted with the donation, said Trust president Colin Petty. “Like many charities, the Rainy Day Trust has experienced a drop in income over the past couple of years, and it’s been a real struggle to maintain the level of support for our beneficiaries. We’re hugely grateful to the guests at the dinner for their generosity.”

Founded in 1843, the Rainy Day Trust is a benevolent fund which provides annual grants and one-off assistance for people who have spent a significant part of their working lives in the hardware, ironmongery and diy industry, and who now find they need a helping hand.

B&Q joins the Rainy Day Trust

B&Q, Europe's largest DIY retailer, has become a corporate member of the Rainy Day Trust, the charity of the home improvement industry.

Euan Sutherland, CEO of B&Q and Kingfisher's UK Division, said joining was the right thing to do. "When B&Q was invited to become a corporate member of the Rainy Day Trust we didn't hesitate to join," he said. "It's our industry charity, and it was the right thing for B&Q to do as a responsible retailer.

And he went on to suggest that other retailers and suppliers follow suit: "I would encourage all companies in our sector to become members so that the charity can continue its great work supporting people who have worked in our industry."
The Rainy Day Trust was founded in 1843 as the Iron, Hardware and Metal Trades Pension Society, and later received patronage of the Prince of Wales as the Royal Metal Trades Benevolent Society. It is the only charity which exists solely to help people who have worked in the hardware, housewares and DIY trade and industry, and who now need a helping hand.

"We are absolutely delighted to have B&Q on board," said Trust vice-president and DIY Week publisher Colin Petty. "It's the market leader, and it has shown leadership by giving us its support and becoming a corporate member. We're obviously hoping that many more companies will follow that lead, because every new subscription means we can say 'yes' to more requests for assistance."
